Physical Education at Dean Gibson

Intent

The intent of Dean Gibson Catholic Primary School’s Physical Education curriculum is to inspire all children to enjoy, succeed, be curious and excel in sport and other physical activities. We aim to use the stunning and unique South Lakeland outdoors and countryside for our children to maximise time spent in the outdoors, caring for our diverse local environment and being active. We want our children to lead lifelong healthy lifestyles by fostering a love and curiosity of Physical Education, physical activity and the great Cumbrian outdoors. Opportunities to compete in competitive inter-school sports events and festivals will be offered to all children in order to build their skills and curiosity and help to embed values such as teamwork, leadership, fairness and respect for our team and opposition. We want to develop our children’s curiosity and widen the experiences we offer to a range of sports and physical activities that they may not have experienced before. This will build curious minds, opening pathways to experience wider sporting opportunities.

We build diverse links with local clubs and educational establishments such as Kendal College, to ensure our children can move onto the next stage in their sports development. Through Physical Education we aim to develop the children’s knowledge, resilience, curiosity, PE skills and understanding, so that they can perform with increasing confidence and competence in a range of physical activities. We aim to improve health and well-being, promote active participation and lifelong love of sport and physical activity. Whole-heartedly, we want each child to fulfil his or her potential. We strive to ensure that our children’s experience of Physical Education is positive, motivating and enjoyable. We will use the great Cumbrian outdoors to inspire and nurture our children’s positive attitudes to a healthy lifestyle, which are firmly embedded in our curriculum.

Doing all the sport at Dean Gibson is good for your fitness and it makes you happy!

Attainment targets

By the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant programme of study.

PE Content- Key Stage 1

Pupils will develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. They will be able to engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations. Pupils will be taught to:

  • master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities

  • participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending

  • perform dances using simple movement patterns.

PE Content- Key Stage 2

Pupils will continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They will enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. They will develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success. Pupils will be taught to:

  •  use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination

  • play competitive games, modified where appropriate [for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis], and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending

  • develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance [for example, through athletics and gymnastics]

  • perform dances using a range of movement patterns

  • take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team

  • compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.

Swimming and Water Safety

We provide swimming instruction for Year 3 and Year 4 children. In particular we teach children to:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres

  • use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]

  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
